Kine Each week told you “The new robust ‘crooks slide out’ are peopled having a colourful diversity out-of important and you may arresting letters, and they, skilfully controlled because of the writer and you may manager, allow the motion picture to help you tread drinking water effectively. It’s just into the find yourself this starts to break down, however the smack-right up finale rescues they on the ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you will wisely dialogued, it’ll have no great problem into the way of life off the very unappealing term.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Flick Bulletin said “The film actions in the a fast speed, this new dialogue try slick and characterisations essentially energetic. This new film’s journalist and you may movie director, Robert Rossen, creates an effective multidimensional chess video game, getting mortal limits, ranging from Johnny, his boss (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s spouse (Ellen Received), good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a beneficial scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sis (Nina Foch) spent some time working at the local casino and you will dated good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh caustically epigrammatic program, the cast’s suavely regulated body language regarding like and you may threat, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you can smartly cocky pictures (as well as his political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet outlined spectacle an invisible vintage of your genre.” [ ten ]

While the area follows a common pattern, new characterizations is actually new together with performances adequate so you’re able to overbalance. Dialog are terse and you will relevant, avoiding the psychological, phoney touching. Unusual camera basics come-along occasionally to escalate focus and briefly arrest the eye. Solid teamplay by the Robert Rossen, increasing while the movie director-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, brand spanking new copywriter and you will member manufacturer, including aids in making it a delicate creation.” [ 11 ]

It is mainly an issue of watching Mr. Powell undergo their paces stylishly if you’re a giant throw from stars and you may actresses render your regular service. Evelyn Keyes performs the favorable absolutely nothing woman exactly who brings about the brand new best in your and you will Ellen Received is the sleek and slinky vixen whom gets your on jams. Thomas Gomez are oily as the villain and Lee J. Cobb really does a special able trip while the a weary cops inspector which fundamentally shuts the case. Significant amounts of sipping and puffing is done because of the all alarmed.” [ a dozen ]
